Atlassian will discontinue Hipchat and Stride and now recommends Slack

The market for instant messaging and team chat solutions for businesses is tight-knit and ruled by established top-dogs with an abundance of financial resources – above all, Slack. Even when it's possible to establish a new large-scale solution, it is only possible with a lot of expenditure. So Atlassian has decided to cut funding for these projects.

Atlassian has announced that it will not develop the solutions Hipchat (Cloud, Server and also Data Center) and Stride  any further. These products will be discontinued. In the meantime, Atlassian has entered into a strategic partnership with Slack and recommends that customers migrate to this service. (You can find more information about that partnership here.)

The end of development means that, from now on, Hipchat and Stride will no longer receive updates or be provided with new functionality. Atlassian will still provide patches and bug fixes for a limited support period.

Customers will need to find alternatives

In the coming months, you can continue to use your system as usual. However, once the support period elapses, Hipchat Cloud and Stride will no longer be accessible. Customers should use this window of time to swiftly migrate their data to an alternative service.

Customers running Hipchat Server and Hipchat Data Center within their own infrastructure can theoretically keep using their solutions indefinitely. But it’s not advisable in the medium- and long-term since Atlassian will not provide security patches once the support period has ended, and sooner or later the software will be at risk. These customers should also migrate to another solution.

The end-of-support dates have been announced

Atlassian has given us the following dates for when support will end for these products:

  • Stride and Hipchat Cloud: February 15, 2019 (after which the services will be switched off)
  • Hipchat Server and Hipchat Data Center:
    • Hipchat Data Center (version 3.0): June 22, 2019
    • Hipchat Data Center (version 3.1): September 26, 2019
    • Hipchat Server (version 2.1): December 8, 2018
    • Hipchat Server (version 2.2): May 30, 2019
    • Hipchat Server (version 2.4): June 30, 2020

Atlassian will not support these products beyond these dates. They will be officially dead and buried.

Recent customers can be reimbursed

Have you just recently bought a new licence for one of the affected products? If so, Atlassian will reimburse you. This offer will be effective for a 30-day period starting from July 26, 2018. As we are an Atlassian Platinum Solution Partner, you can inquire about getting reimbursed through us.

Alternatives: G Suite with Hangouts Chat

As we mentioned earlier, Atlassian has announced a strategic partnership with Slack and advises customers to switch to market-leading IM and group chat providers. This won’t be the only attractive alternative for every Hipchat or Stride customer. High fees and a per-user basis already present an obstacle as they can greatly inhibit system growth in your business.

In Google G Suite, the real-time communications platform Hangouts Chat is included in their standard plan. It provides all relevant team features like open and closed rooms, one-to-one chats and a sophisticated mobile solution. It is also strongly integrated with G Suite’s other tools.

We are an official G Suite Reseller and would be happy to guide you through the implementation, licencing and productive use of Google G Suite. You can test G Suite via us, including Hangouts Chat, comprehensively free for 30 days (usually the trial period would only be 2 weeks). Contact us!
