Hello Google Workspace, goodbye G Suite

Google Workspace - Rising to the challenges of a changing world

The world has changed, and so too has the way we work.  Covid 19 has forced us to find ways to work outside of the office. However, even before this happened, there was a growing trend of flexible working models.  Things like working on the road or from your home were becoming more popular.

Google has again stepped up to the plate in this respect and recently introduced Google Workspace.  The new brand replaces the previously used G Suite.  Google Workspace is not just a name change, but is designed to bring the tools you know and love under one roof.

With Google Workspace, Google offers you a virtual space in which you can communicate and collaborate seamlessly with your colleagues and external parties - whether in the office, on the road, or from home.

Google Workspace presents three important developments:

  • A new, deeply integrated user experience to support even more effective collaboration and exchange between employees and with customers.
  • A new brand identity that reflects Google's product vision and the way its products work together.
  • New and improved solutions to meet individual customer needs.

What is new about Google Workspace?

Besides the new name and appearance, the changes affect the following areas:

The pricing models: Where G Suite was limited to three pricing models, Google Workspace gives you four different tariffs to choose from. Business Starter as the cheapest plan starts with 5.20 Euro per user and month. Take a look at the complete overview of the new Google Workspace tariffs.
Please note that due to the new pricing, other usage models apply, for example, the storage usage of Google Drive.

New functions: Among other things, functions such as collaborative editing of a document within a chat room will be available in the future. This new feature means that content can then be quickly shared with external contributors for collaborative editing. Another new feature is the preview of linked content and mentioned contacts within Google Docs, sheets, and slides. This will help you work more easily and with more efficiency.

In July, Google already announced that Google Meet for video meetings will be integrated into tools such as Gmail and Chat. This feature will be extended to docs, sheets, and slides. This will allow you to see and hear contributors at work - almost as if you were sitting together in the office.

What changes for me as a G Suite customer?

Nothing at first. Customers of the G Suite Basic, Business, or Enterprise packages will receive an e-mail from Google containing further information by October 16th, 2020, at the latest.

Existing G-Suite contracts will continue to be valid for the duration of the contract. There will be a transition period for flexible rates.  As your Google Cloud partner, we are available to answer all your questions.

Customers in the education and non-profit segments will also be migrated to Google Workspace in the coming months but can continue to use the G Suite and its tools as usual. Google Nonprofit will continue to be available to eligible organizations through the Google for Nonprofits program.

For G Suite Essentials customers, there will only be a name change to Google Workspace Essentials. No other changes are planned.

When will the change take place?

The G Suite is now Google Workspace, effective immediately. The name and icons of the entire product range will be adapted in the coming weeks.
