A few months ago, in August 2024, Atlassian announced that it had acquired Rewatch, a game-changing video platform designed to streamline asynchronous communication and collaboration. This acquisition marks an exciting expansion of Atlassian’s offerings, as Rewatch will soon integrate with Loom, the company’s popular video communication tool, which it acquired in October 2023.
Together, these products will empower teams to work more efficiently by leveraging AI-powered features that enhance meeting productivity, knowledge sharing, and team collaboration—all while reducing the need for endless live meetings.
With Loom and Rewatch working together, teams benefit from enhanced meeting automation, AI-generated summaries, and powerful integrations with other productivity tools. This integration promises to accelerate Atlassian’s vision of becoming the video system of record for enterprises.
What is Rewatch?
Rewatch is a smart video platform that helps teams collaborate more effectively by simplifying meeting recording, sharing, and management. It uses AI to automatically transcribe meetings, generate summaries, and create action items, reducing the need for time-consuming meetings.
Key Features of Rewatch
Rewatch offers several core features, including the AI meeting assistant, a centralized video hub, screen recorder, series, and integrations. Let’s review each of these features to understand in-depth what this tool is all about.
AI Meeting Assistant
The heart of Rewatch is the recordings themselves. You can record videos of meetings hosted in Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Webex. To automate recording and sharing, you’ll need to connect your calendar; both Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar are supported.
Once the calendar is connected, the AI Meeting Assistant can easily record meetings so everyone can benefit from the content. There are three ways to record meetings: 1) Create automation so meetings are automatically recorded based on your rules, 2) Individually toggle meetings on a one-off basis, and 3) Send an assistant to record your meeting on-demand while it’s happening. For more information, check out this detailed guide.
Once the recordings are available, the AI Assistant adds AI-powered recaps, action items, etc. Here is an overall list of all the critical features of the AI Meeting Assistant:
- Automated Meeting Notes & Transcripts: Rewatch automatically records meetings and creates detailed notes, transcripts, and action items for easy reference.
- AI-Powered Recaps: Meeting summaries are generated and delivered to attendees with direct access to the recording.
- Action Item Generation: Rewatch’s AI assigns to-dos based on meeting discussions, ensuring clear follow-ups.
- Time-Stamped Chapters: Skip to essential parts of the recording or transcript with time-stamped markers, saving valuable time.
- Automated Sharing: Recordings and summaries are automatically shared with relevant team members, ensuring no one misses out on important details.
Video Hub
Once the recordings or videos are available, they are stored and organized in the video hub, which is easily accessible, centralized, and searchable.
- Centralized Video Storage: Store, organize, and share all your team’s video content in one place for easy access and collaboration.
- Searchable Knowledge Base: Quickly find relevant videos and notes, eliminating the need for outdated wikis and manual searches.
- Granular Permissions: Control access to video content with customizable roles and permissions.
- Subscription & Notifications: Stay updated on new videos shared with you or specific channels, collections, or tags.
- Curated Homepage: Customize your team’s homepage to highlight important videos and content for quick reference.
Screen Recorder
Rewatch also allows you to record your screen, not just meetings.
- Easy Recording: Instantly record your screen or camera to create polished videos, ideal for training, feedback, and presentations.
- Collaboration Tools: Share videos internally or externally, add comments, and attach files to foster collaboration.
- Flexible Playback: Adjust playback speed, view highlights, or jump to key moments to maximize review efficiency.
- Unlimited Storage & Bandwidth: Rewatch allows unlimited video storage and bandwidth, ensuring flexibility for teams of any size.
Series
Like Instagram Stories, Rewatch offers a ‘Series’ where team members can add short recordings and update their teammates.
- Asynchronous Team Updates: Replace repetitive, in-person meetings with collaborative video series, allowing team members to contribute at their own pace.
- Simple Reminders: Set a cadence for team updates and receive automatic reminders for team members to add their contributions.
- Easy Access: Catch up on the latest updates with just a swipe up, fostering more human and authentic communication.
- Clearer Communication: Organize recurring updates into video series for more efficient and engaging communication, from team standups to leadership shareouts.
Integrations
Rewatch enhances your workflow by seamlessly integrating with a variety of tools your team already uses. Whether you rely on video conferencing software or collaboration platforms, Rewatch ensures everything works together without disrupting your existing processes. Some of the key integrations include:
- Zoom: Easily capture and record Zoom meetings, automatically adding them to your Rewatch library.
- Google Meet: Sync Google Meet recordings with Rewatch, ensuring that all your meetings are available for review and collaboration.
- Microsoft Teams: Rewatch integrates with Teams for smooth recording and sharing of meetings across channels.
- Slack: Share meeting videos, summaries, and action items directly into Slack channels for instant access.
These integrations enable your team to capture meetings, share information, and collaborate effectively, all while using the tools they already know.
Rewatch Joins Atlassian: What Does This Mean?
Rewatch and Atlassian—This acquisition will bring powerful AI-driven video capabilities to the Atlassian ecosystem.
Rewatch will be integrated with Loom. The combined features of these video communication tools will expand the scope of Loom’s current capabilities. Currently, Atlassian is expected to integrate two critical features from Rewatch into Loom: AI meeting assistant and calendar integration.
AI Meeting Assistant
This new team member will participate in virtual meetings and ensure all meeting content—such as recordings, notes, and action items—is organized and accessible after the meeting.
Here’s what attendees can expect from the AI Assistant:
- Tailored Meeting Notes: The AI assistant will generate notes based on templates for common meeting types. Attendees can edit the notes further or add their insights.
- Action Items: The assistant automatically creates and assigns action items, helping attendees avoid the post-meeting scramble. This functionality will be expanded with Rovo Agents, which will review the notes and action items and automatically update relevant Confluence pages, Jira issues, and service tickets.
- Full Transcript: Attendees can search, copy snippets, or download the full meeting transcript. Transcripts and captions will also be available in over 50 languages, making it easy for teams to share and understand meeting content.
Integration with Calendars for Seamless Automation
The second key feature is calendar integration. Loom can connect to Google or Outlook calendars, allowing users to streamline their workflows with powerful automation. Here’s what users can expect from this integration:
- Automated Recording: Set up rules to enable or disable recordings based on calendar events.
- On-Demand Recordings: You can choose specific meetings to record or send an assistant to record meetings even if you can’t attend.
- Automated Sharing: Recordings can be shared automatically with meeting attendees, ensuring that all necessary parties have access to the content and action items.
With these enhancements, the Rewatch and Loom integration will make video communication even more powerful, ensuring that teams can collaborate more effectively without the hassle of traditional meetings.
The Future of Rewatch and Atlassian’s Integration
This acquisition is just the beginning. Atlassian also plans to integrate Rewatch with its recently launched Rovo AI platform so that meeting notes can quickly become Jira Issues, for example, and the transcripts become searchable within the overall business context.
Loom co-founder Joe Thomas embodies this excitement for the future:
“The reason why we got so excited about Rewatch is the fact that we believe Atlassian is disproportionately positioned to take meeting recordings and maximize the value of them. This is because Loom already generates transcripts for every single video that’s created and then we layer all the AI prompts around it — part of Rovo is that it is a unified search [platform] across an enterprise and it’s also building on top of it.” (source: Interview)
As Rewatch integrates with Atlassian’s suite of tools, we can expect even more AI-powered features to streamline communication, reduce the burden of endless meetings, and improve overall productivity for teams across various industries. The real challenge is to continue to provide the best user experience.
It is too soon to tell whether and how Rewatch’s other features, such as Video Hub or Series, will be integrated with Loom or Rovo. However, one thing is clear: Atlassian’s potential to create a comprehensive video system for enterprises is vast, and Rewatch is another essential cornerstone of this expansion.
