Do you want to upgrade to Confluence 9 and are eagerly awaiting Linchpin compatibility?
We’ve got some news for you and your social intranet.
👀 What Can You Look Forward To?
Starting in November 2024, each Linchpin app will have two versions. One version will work with Confluence 9 and newer, while the other is compatible with Confluence up to version 8.9.7. Keep reading to find out why we made this change and what it means for your system.
❓ Why Are We Doing This?
Confluence 9 has been released, and it brings a lot of fundamental changes.
Those changes are also fundamental, breaking changes to the core architecture of the program and requires apps, such as Linchpin, to use new APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and bundle several libraries previously provided by Confluence 7 and 8. As such, the Confluence 9 version makes this update incompatible with previous releases/versions.
Thus, it’s necessary to customize our Linchpin apps in depth – on which we are already working. Such technical changes have a strong impact on the code that is making Linchpin possible.
⭐️ Our Recommendation
We recommend waiting for the release of Confluence 9.2, the Long Term Support (LTS) version, which Atlassian has already confirmed is on the way. By switching to an LTS version, you'll benefit from long-term security and gain access to new Linchpin features without any concerns.
For more details, check out Atlassian's update here.
🔮 Overview of All Version Changes Starting In November 2024
For Confluence 9 and above: Includes all new features and enhancements.
For Confluence 8 and below: Contains existing features, if technically feasible new features will also be available.
We'll keep on providing important security patches and bug fixes for both versions.
Confluence 9 brings many changes that improve several functionalities like security and also brings new features, like the dark mode. (Please note, our first Confluence 9-compatible version sadly won’t be compatible with the dark mode and we advise on using the light mode for the time being.)
‼️ Please Note The Following
Your Confluence UPM should automatically offer the right version to update to, so that you don’t have to worry about looking for it manually.
Updating your Linchpin app from a non-Confluence 9 compatible version to a Confluence 9 compatible version whilst still on Confluence 8 or older may result in bugs, performance issues and/or data loss.
But don't worry, we've decided to package the Confluence 9 compatibility release into a separate major release to give you the best possible user experience and make it easier to choose the right app.
🤔 In a nutshell, how do you know which version is right for you?
Linchpin apps that are compatible with Confluence 9 will get a new major version.
- For Linchpin Intranet Suite, the versions are 6.x and newer.
- For Linchpin Essentials, the versions are 3.x and newer.
- For the smaller individual Linchpin apps, such as User Profiles or Enterprise News, the first version number changes accordingly (for example, from User Profiles 3.10.2 to User Profiles 4.0).
